A Farewell from Bud Cottrill

Former KC Agriculture Extension Agent 2001-2003

It seems that the hardest step to take is always the first.  Whether beginning a new garden or home project, or writing a letter or article, it’s sometimes difficult to initiate the process.  That’s the way it is in writing this final column.  By the time you read this, I will have resigned my position as Agricultural Agent for the WVU-Kanawha County Extension Service and will be operating a lawn care/landscaping business in Ocala, Florida.  It is a major change in my life, but one that seems appropriate at this time.  This may seem like a sudden change, but I had been investigating the prospect for some time.  Circumstances dictated that once the decision was made, I needed to move quickly to maintain a smooth transition for the business.  I do apologize for not having the time to formally and more personally inform each of you of the decision.

I must say that I have enjoyed working with the Kanawha County Master Gardeners.  You are a strong, dedicated, enthusiastic group that thoroughly loves gardening, yet more than that you have a desire to share that passion with others.  And that is what makes Master Gardening special – you are more than just volunteers, you are educators and mentors of others who have the same interest.  I have had the privilege of working with many different people and organizations, but you are one of the most professional and dedicated groups I have known.  Your ability to govern and organize your activities is admirable.

It would be difficult to thank each of you individually for your help and patience over the past two years, but the officers and committees have done an outstanding job.  I hope each of you will continue to support their efforts.  I need to specifically thank Delores, Harry and Gladys for their words of encouragement and wisdom.  Without your guidance, the job would have been much more difficult.

Thanks again for being such an outstanding group.  I wish each of you success in all your future endeavors.  Happy Gardening!!!
