KC MASTER GARDENER RECOGNIZED
Mary Anne Michael was honored during the July tour of Blaney House (home of West Virginia University’s President) and gardens when more than 100 West Virginia Master Gardeners were entertained by President and Mrs. Hardesty. During the tour of the gardens, Mary Anne addressed the group and explained the basic concepts used to accomplish this major renovation of the grounds and gardens. During his address to the group, President Hardesty announced that a permanent plaque was to be installed honoring those who were instrumental in this major redesign of the grounds. This plaque was installed outside near the garden and reads:
“The gardens and landscaping at Blaney House were established, following the house renovations in 2002, through the volunteer efforts of landscape designer Rebecca Frischkorn and Master Gardener Mary Anne Michael, with the assistance of university employee Joe Dennis.”
Mary Anne volunteered her time and talents to assist in the overall design layout and shape of new gardens beds, which began in 2002. Then she selected the plant material and did the design for the individual gardens. Her West Virginia roots can be seen in the many native shrubs and plants included as the backbone of the beds. A horseshoe shaped perennial border was installed on the back lawn to provide privacy and for the enjoyment of guests of the house. This lovely border also includes native plant material, as well as non-native ornamentals, and was created to provide year-round interest.
Mary Anne’s hands-on approach is evident when this wonderful garden is viewed by visitors. Her efforts and talents have resulted in a wonderful garden that will be enjoyed by many.
Congratulations Mary Anne!!!
