AUTUMN GARDENING TIPS
Dig up, divide and transplant those crowded perennials
Plant mums, winter pansies and flowering kale and cabbage for fall color
Remove spent annuals and add them to your compost pile
Now is the time to take cuttings from roses
Houseplants outside? Start moving them indoors.
Start planning and planting spring bulbs such as tulips, crocus, daffodils, anemone and hyacinths.
Iris and other spring blooming perennials can still be divided and/or transplanted. Don’t forget to water well.
Take cuttings from geraniums to bloom indoors this winter. The cuttings should be 2 to 4 inches.
Fall is perfect for planting new trees and shrubs. Roots can get established over the winter months.
If your lawn has bare patches, overseed in the fall.
Dig up bulbs that are not winter hardy such as cannas, callas, begonias, elephant ears, caladiums and dahlias. Get them ready for winter storage.
Fertilize houseplants after bringing them indoors to stay. Do not fertilize again until March.
Save some whole leaves to pile around roses after the ground has frozen.
Don’t forget to rake leaves as they fall.
